RESUMO

The levels of naturally occurring radionuclides in soil, grass, and milk were measured in this study in order to calculate the transfer factor of radionuclides from soil to grass and grass to milk obtained from Erbil governorate in Iraq. High efficiency gamma spectrometry used for the measurement. It has been determined that the mean activity concentrations of 232Th, 226Ra, and 40K are 3.08, 8.37, and 253 BqKg-1 in soil, 0.5, 0.39, and 203.05 BqKg-1, in grass, and 0.29, 0.084, and 29.69 BqL-1, in milk, respectively. For soil to grass, the transfer factor values for 232Th, 226Ra, and 40K were found to be 0.18, 0.052, and 0.84, respectively, for soil to grass. For grass to milk, the transfer factor values for 232Th, 226Ra, and 40K were found to be 0.45, 0.166, and 0.11 dayL-1, respectively. The average transfer factor for 232Th, 226Ra, and 40K in all samples were lower than the world average value.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The TikTok app is one of the video-based social media platforms that is currently trending and commonly used by teenagers. The data about teenage users of the TikTok app are limited. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of TikTok app use among teenagers in Saudi Arabia and to investigate the association between TikTok app use and the social comparison and the body image of the study population. Further, to explore the potential associations between the social comparison and the body image of the TikTok app users and their different characteristics. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey study was conducted all over Saudi Arabia. The study included male and female teenagers, aged 12-19 years. The researchers used a structured, self-administered questionnaire to collect data, and it was disseminated using different social media platforms. The social comparison was measured using the questionnaire of the Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure, and the body image was measured using the Measurement of the Body Image Scale. The data were analyzed using the SPSS software version 26 (Chicago, IL: SSPS Inc.). Continuous variables were compared using the Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, or Kruskal-Wallis tests, whereas categorical variables were compared using the Chi-square or Fisher's exact tests as appropriate. Spearman's rank correlation was applied to investigate the association between body image and social comparison scores among TikTok app users and non-users. RESULTS: This study included 384 Saudi teenagers. Females (n=260) outnumbered males (n=124) (67.7% and 32.3%, respectively), and the mean of their age was 16.3±2.0 years. The researchers found a high prevalence (343/384, 89.3%) of TikTok app use among the studied teenagers. There was a significantly high median of the social comparison score among the TikTok app users (33.0, IQR: 28.0-38.0) compared to the non-users (28.0, IQR: 26.0-34.0), p=0.005. TikTok app users also showed a significantly lower median body image score (64.0, IQR: 54.0-72.0) in comparison to the non-users (67.0, IQR: 58.0-73.0), p=0.037. The correlation between social comparison and body image among teenagers using TikTok showed a negative relationship, but it was not significant (p=0.110). However, a significant negative weak relationship was found between body image and comparison of abilities (rs coefficient=-0.113, p=0.037). CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the current study indicate a high prevalence of TikTok use among teenagers in Saudi Arabia. The use of TikTok was associated with a high social comparison and a negative body image, with more than half of the users expressing a negative body image. Comparison of abilities was associated with an increased level of body dissatisfaction. These findings emphasize the need for the development and implementation of public health policies and awareness programs to promote body acceptance, especially for young people across the country. Future studies should focus on the long-term impact of TikTok use on psychological health.

RESUMO

This article describes how to calculate neutron-induced fission reaction cross sections using a proposed empirical formula and the EMPIRE 3.2.3 and TALYS 1.95 computer codes for Uranium isotopes up to the third fission plateau. In this study, the excitation functions of 232U (n, f), 233U (n, f), 234U (n, f), 235U (n, f), 236U (n, f), 237U (n, f) and 238U (n, f) nuclear reactions were calculated at 1-20 MeV neutron energies. The results were contrasted to measured values from the Experimental Nuclear Reaction Data (EXFOR) as well as the evaluated data from Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF) such as (EAF-2010, JEFF-3.3, ENDF/B-VIII.0 and TENDL-2019). Overall, the calculated, experimental, and evaluated fission cross-sections are in concordance.

RESUMO

In this study, the activity concentrations of 40K, 232Th, and 226Ra radionuclides were estimated in imported milk powder samples from 40 brands available in local markets in Erbil Governorate, Iraq. The measurements were performed using High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector. The results indicated that the average activity concentrations of 40K, 232Th, and 226Ra were 241, 0.476, and 1.23 Bq kg-1, respectively, and comparisons were made based on the typical consumption characteristics of powdered milk by Kurdistan residents. In all investigated age groups (2-17 years), the average annual effective doses were below the ICRP-recommended limit of 1 mSv y-1 for public exposure. Radiological hazard parameters were determined based on the measured radioactivity concentrations. The relation between all the determined activities of natural radionuclides and radiological parameters was examined using multivariate statistical analysis techniques such as histograms, descriptive statistics, and Pearson correlation analyses. The cancer risk in all samples was lower than the allowable value of (2.5 × 10-3), while the ingestion dose in two samples was higher than the worldwide acceptable value of (0.29) mSv y-1.

RESUMO

In this research, the radioactivity caused by natural radionuclides (40 K, 232Th, and 226Ra) was evaluated in infant milk consumed in Erbil, Iraq. The measurements were performed using an HPGe gamma-ray spectrometer. The variation of activity concentrations in milk samples was (99.56-256.9 Bq kg-1) for 40 K, (BDL-0.53 Bq kg-1) for 232Th, and (0.27-5.59 Bq kg-1) for 226Ra, as determined by the results. The radiological parameters of Eing, Dorg, and ELCR were calculated and compared to international standards. The correlation between computed radiological hazard parameters and natural radionuclides was analyzed statistically using Pearson's correlation. Overall, the results indicate that infant milk consumption in Erbil is radiologically safe and that consumers of these brands of milk are unlikely to be directly exposed to radiological health risks.

RESUMO

Gene editing, especially with clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats associated protein 9 (CRISPR-Cas9), has advanced gene function science. Gene editing's rapid advancement has increased its medical/clinical value. Due to its great specificity and efficiency, CRISPR/Cas9 can accurately and swiftly screen the whole genome. This simplifies disease-specific gene therapy. To study tumor origins, development, and metastasis, CRISPR/Cas9 can change genomes. In recent years, tumor treatment research has increasingly employed this method. CRISPR/Cas9 can treat cancer by removing genes or correcting mutations. Numerous preliminary tumor treatment studies have been conducted in relevant fields. CRISPR/Cas9 may treat gene-level tumors. CRISPR/Cas9-based personalized and targeted medicines may shape tumor treatment. This review examines CRISPR/Cas9 for tumor therapy research, which will be helpful in providing references for future studies on the pathogenesis of malignancy and its treatment.

RESUMO

Semi-empirical formula for calculating the average (n, α) reaction cross-section was derived by using the EXFOR experimental data at 14-15 MeV neutron energies for 133 target nuclei in the mass number range 9≤A≤209. In this new systematic, the non-elastic cross-section portion has been modified by [Formula: see text] , while the asymmetry parameter-dependent term has been maintained. Using EMPIRE 3.2.3 and TALYS 1.95, the (n, α) cross sections for selected nuclei within the same energy range were calculated. The experimental data can be predicted with greater precision when the cross sections derived from the proposed formula are compared to those derived from codes and earlier systematics.

RESUMO

Two of nine strains of Listeria monocytogenes examined were found to contain plasmid DNA. Strain 19112 contained a 31.1 kb plasmid and strain 7644 contained a 49.4 kb plasmid. Each of the strains was cured of its plasmid by heat treatment at 46°C. Both the wild-type and plasmid-negative forms of each strain were screened for cadmium resistance. The 31.1 kb plasmid of L. monocytogenes 19112 was shown to confer resistance to cadmium. Listeria monocytogenes 7644 did not show resistance to cadmium. The plasmids for both strains were isolated and purified by CsCl density-gradient centrifugation. Each plasmid was electroporated back into the respective plasmid-negative strain. The catalase (CA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were determined for the wild type, plasmid-negative and electroporated strains. There was a significant decrease in CA and SOD activities upon loss of the plasmid from each strain of L. monocytogenes . Strain 19112 showed a 36% decrease in CA activity and an 81% decrease in SOD activity as a result of plasmid removal. Strain 7644 showed a 22% decrease in both CA and SOD activities following plasmid loss. Catalase and SOD activity levels increased for both strains following reinsertion of the plasmid through electroporation. Catalase and SOD activity levels of L. monocytogenes 7644 were higher for the transformed strain than those of the wild type. Catalase and SOD activity levels of transformed L. monocytogenes 19112 were less than in the corresponding wild type. It appears that plasmids in L. monocytogenes strains 19112 and 7644 may be involved in influencing the regulation of the production of CA and SOD. Plasmid copy number may influence the level of activity of these enzymes.
